Denis R. de St. Aubin
Denis founded the company in 1994. He motivates his team of financial professionals to exceed client expectations as a company standard. His successful business insight has established several companies, including Heritage Investments, Heritage Concrete Service Corporation, and Chatham Hackney Insurance. Denis attended High Point College and East Carolina University. He is a member of the Siler City Rotary Club and Chairman of the Board of Directors for Heritage Concrete Service Corporation and the NC Art Incubator.
Michael T. Spohn
Michael serves as President and Chief Financial Officer for Old North State Trust. He oversees Old North State Trust’s financial and operational activities. In addition, he is an individual client advisor and financial consultant for small to medium sized business owners. Prior to joining Old North State Trust, Michael served as Chief Financial Officer for both public and privately owned family companies, and served as auditor and consultant at the public accounting firm BDO Seidman, LLP in Greensboro, NC. Michael received a Bachelor of Science in Finance and Economics from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro as well as a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from High Point University.
Susan Beard CTFA
Vice President & Senior Wealth Advisor
As Vice President and Senior Wealth Advisor for Old North State Trust, Susan provides objective and thoughtful guidance in advising individuals and families on wealth and planning strategies. She also focuses on new business development in the Triad community regarding financial planning, portfolio management, trust services, and company retirement plans. Susan has 30 years of experience in the financial services industry, first with Bank of America Trust, then with Wachovia Bank and Wells Fargo Wealth Management. Susan is a graduate of Mary Washington University with a B.S. in Business Administration. She holds her Series 65 license and her CTFA certification. Susan enjoys community involvement and challenges; she has participated in fundraising for the Make-A- Wish Foundation of central and western North Carolina by completing a 28-mile hike in one day. She is a member of the Society of Financial Service Professionals, Greensboro, NC Chapter, and a board member of the SFSP Foundation. Susan is also a member of the Greensboro Estate Planning Council the High Point Estate Planning Council, and the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro Professional Advisors Committee.

Susan Willett MBA, CFP®, CTFA
Managing Director of Client Services
Susan is our Managing Director of Client Services. She is responsible for the total client experience at Old North State Trust, working with clients to assess their needs, develop plans to meet those necessities, and continues to work with them on an ongoing basis to ensure those plans continue to meet their needs and the needs of their loved ones. With her years of experience, Susan is uniquely positioned to develop relationships with clients to ensure that their wishes are met. Prior to joining Old North State Trust, Susan was a Vice President and Trust Advisor with Wachovia Wealth Management for nine years, specializing in trust and estate administration and estate planning. She was also a bank examiner for the North Carolina Office of the Commissioner of Banks for five years before her service with Wachovia. Susan graduated and received her Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in Trust Management and Master of Business Administration from Campbell University. She also earned designations as a Certified Financial Planner™ and a Certified Trust and Financial Advisor in 2003. Susan is an active member and past President of the New Hanover County Estate Planning Council, a past member of the Executive Board of the Cape Fear Council of the Boy Scouts of America and member and past Secretary of the Board of Directors for the Domestic Violence Shelter & Services, Inc.
Managing Director of Trust Services
Tammy serves as Managing Director of Trust Services and oversees all aspects of trust services for Old North State Trust, LLC. She is responsible for the administration of her client accounts, as well as developing the policies and procedures that outline the trust administration for the company. Tammy has over 19 years of experience, most recently serving as the Fiduciary Manager of the NewBridge Bank Wealth Division. She assists her clients in developing specific financial strategies focusing on asset protection, investment management, and wealth transition techniques. Tammy is currently responsible for the administration of personal, family, and charitable trust, as well as estate planning and settlement. In addition to her fiduciary duties, she is responsible for acting as agent on behalf of Old North State Trust, LLC for multiple clients by assisting them in the development of an investment allocation strategy that best fits their overall wealth plan. She also manages Individual Retirement Accounts, Deferred Compensation Plans, 401(k) plans, and oversees custodial relationships.
Tammy is a graduate of the Cannon Financial Trust Institute with a concentration of Personal Trust and Fiduciary law. Through her career, Tammy has held increasingly key positions that include compliance and regulatory oversight, relationship management, and estate planning. Tammy has served as Chairperson on multiple committees both in her professional and personal life and is an active member of the United Methodist church.
Senior Trust Advisor
As a Senior Trust Officer for Old North State Trust, Bob assists and guides clients in developing their financial objectives through the administration of trusts, investment management and estate accounts. Before joining ONST, Bob worked with RBC Centura Bank, principally as Personal Trust Services Manager and Senior Trust Officer. He also served as Vice President of the Trust Alliance Group for Comerica Bank & Trust and coordinated the transition of trust accounts to Comerica Bank as part of the planned exiting of the trust business by RBC Centura Bank. Bob graduated from East Carolina University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He also received a Masters in Business Administration from Campbell University and completed the Southeastern Trust School at Campbell University. Bob has been active with trust education through Campbell University serving on the Trust Foundation Board and as Dean of the Southeastern Trust School. He also serves on the Advisory Board of the Rocky Mount Area Salvation Army.
Jan Metcalf CTFA
Senior Trust Officer
Jan serves as a Senior Trust Officer and helps assist clients in developing their business and personal financial objectives by the administration of trusts, estates, IRAs, investment and custodial accounts. Jan is a graduate of Elon College, with further graduate work at UNC Charlotte. She is also a graduate of Cannon Financial Institute’s Personal Trust School and is certified by the American Institute of Banking as a Certified Trust and Financial Advisor (CTFA). She is an active member of the Piedmont Estate Planning Council. Jan’s business background includes years of experience in the financial services industry and served as Assistant Vice President & Trust Officer at High Point Bank.
Bobby Whaley CTFA
Senior Trust Officer
Bobby joined the company as a Trust and Estate Consultant. He has experience serving clients in the trust and tax industry in Wilmington. His vast experience provides a foundation for ONST and clients alike on which to base sound financial decisions. Bobby was a Vice President and Trust Advisor with Wachovia Wealth Management specializing in Trust and Estate Administration and Estate Planning. He also worked with Lowrimore, Warwick & Co., CPA’s (now RSM) as a tax accountant specializing in Estate and Retirement Planning. Bobby graduated from Wilmington College (now UNC-Wilmington) with an AA in Business Administration. He is also a graduate of the Southeastern Trust School at Campbell University and has earned the designation Certified Trust and Financial Advisor.
Regina Johnson CTFA
Senior Trust Officer
Regina is our Trust Officer for the Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point, and surrounding Triad area of North Carolina. She spent 25 years in fiduciary administration with Wells Fargo and its predecessor, Wachovia. Most recently, Regina has served as a Financial Advisor at Midtown Financial Advisors holding Series 65, 63 and 6 licenses. She has experience working with trust administration, estate settlement, taxation, asset allocation and risk management. In addition, she also specializes in older adult issues, such as Medicare, social security, financial protection, and transitions. Regina is a graduate of High Point University with a B.S. in Business Administration. She also received a post-baccalaureate degree in Gerontology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Regina graduated from the Southeastern Trust School at Campbell University and completed Cannon Trust School. She holds the Certified Trust Financial Advisor (CTFA) designation from the Institute of Certified Bankers and the Certified Senior Advisor (CSA) designation from the Society of Certified Senior Advisors. She is a member of the Southern Gerontological Society and is an active volunteer with Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP).
Spence Evans, CTFA, MBA
Spence serves as a Trust Officer for Eastern North Carolina through the Greenville Office. He assists and guides clients in developing their financial objectives through the administration of trust, investment management, and estate accounts. Prior to joining ONST, Spence served the Greenville, NC area with BB&T as a Private Wealth Advisor holding Series 66 and 7 licenses. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration with a concentration in Trust and Wealth Management and his Master of Business Administration from Campbell University. Spence serves on various local non-profit boards and committees and is also a Captain for the Winterville Community Fire Department.
Chief Investment Officer & Director of Investments
As Chief Investment Officer, Shea takes a personalized and collaborative approach in assessing clients’ financial needs in order to develop, implement, and monitor tailored investment portfolios that will meet the clients’ specific goals and objectives. Prior to joining Old North State Trust, Shea worked at Wells Fargo and AIG Investments for several years providing financial advice clients. Shea received his Bachelor of Science in Accounting from High Point University and holds the designations of Certified Estate and Trust Specialist (CFS) and Enrolled Agent with the Internal Revenue Service, (EA). He is also a member of The Investment Management Consultants Association (IMCA) and the Society of Quantitative Investment Analysts.
Kara C. Boyd MBA
Senior Portfolio Manager
As a Senior Portfolio Manager for Old North State Trust, Kara implements investment strategies in client accounts and manages the day-to-day portfolio trading. A member of the Trust Investment Committee, Kara provides security research and analysis vital to portfolio construction and asset allocation. Kara has gained significant industry experience working with Morgan Stanley Asset Management and Caxton Corporation on Wall Street and with Edward Jones and BB&T Asset Management in Wilmington, NC. Kara received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Fairfield University in Connecticut and her Master of Business Administration from Boston University. Kara is an active member and past board member of the New Hanover County Estate Planning Council.
Helen E. Marshall
As a Portfolio Analyst for Old North State Trust, Helen is responsible for research projects, investment analysis and investment monitoring for the Investment Committee. In addition, Helen collaborates with the Investment Team on positioning investments, considering tax implications and other factors relative to a client’s individual situation. Helen is a graduate of Appalachian State University, Walker College of Business, with degrees in Finance and Banking and Risk Management and Insurance. Prior to joining Old North State Trust, Helen worked with First Citizens Bank as an intern with the Capital Management Group. Her responsibilities incorporated creating policies for the Fixed Income Team, research on funds relative to environment and social governance, and the creation of client investment reviews.
As a Relationship Manager for Old North State Trust, Sam works closely with Individuals and Retirement Plans as a Fiduciary. Having received his degree in Economics and Commerce from Hampden-Sydney College, Sam has built the foundation to effectively communicate the dynamics of our Investment Philosophy to both existing and prospective clients. In addition to his role as a Relationship Manager, Sam oversees the qualified plan process from the outset to implementation by partnering with Plan Sponsors, Third Party Administrators, and Plan Record-Keepers. Sam ensures that our clients are provided with the highest level of care while holding the fiduciary standard as outlined by ERISA. Sam’s passion is centered around guiding clients toward sound retirement savings strategies, developing accurate financial plans, and serving his clients as their trusted financial partner and resource. Prior to joining Old North State Trust, Sam worked as an investment analyst with a national investment and retirement planning firm in Richmond, VA. As a former certified PGA Golf Professional, Sam enjoys the comradery of golfing and teaching others the benefit of building lasting relationships on and off the course.
Jason Senges JD
Director of Operations
As Director of Operations Jason oversees the daily functions of the in-house trust operations team as well as overseeing corporate vendor relations and contracts. Jason serves as the primary link between trust officers and operations. Jason has been focused on client experience throughout his career prior to joining ONST, first holding a management position in retail guest experience and then spending two years at a client-driven law firm focusing on civil matters. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Elon University in 2006 and his Juris Doctorate from Elon University School of Law in 2013. Jason was admitted to practice law in North Carolina in 2013. He is a member of the Greensboro Bar Association and North Carolina Bar Association.
As Marketing Director, Alyce works to develop, budget, and implement marketing plans, which include advertising, coordination of conferences, special events, and development and maintenance of marketing materials. She also oversees the company’s website, in-house articles, and fostering community initiatives within the organization. Alyce received a BS degree in Interior Design from East Carolina University with a concentration in Business Administration and obtained her teaching certification from UNCW.
Billy joined Old North State Trust in August of 2017 after receiving his BA in English Language and Literature from Hampden-Sydney College. He serves as a Business Development Liaison from our Greensboro office, both networking and promoting the brand and services of ONST across North Carolina and beyond. He is also a graduate of Woodberry Forest School, the McIntire Business Institute at the University of Virginia, and the Southeastern Trust School at Campbell University. Billy is a passionate golfer and outdoorsman with years of experience in the hunting, fishing, and shooting trades.
